Are You at Increased Risk of Parkinson’s Disease from Pollution?

By IGI Global on Sep 19, 2024
Woman wearing a breathing mask with a factory smoke stack in the backgroundA recent study reveals a possible connection between air pollution and an increased risk of developing Parkinson's Disease (PD), a neurodegenerative disease, or a worsening of symptoms in those already affected. It identified correlations between exposure to pollutants, such as fine particulate matter (PM2.5), and neuroinflammation, oxidative stress, and damage to brain cells. Most of the patients in the study that were confirmed with a PD diagnosis lived in metropolitan cores where air pollution is much worse. Patients with the greatest exposure had a 14% increased risk than those in the study with the lowest exposure. This connection underscores the need for improved environmental policies and protective measures for vulnerable populations.
Parkinson's disease is an incurable, age-related degenerative brain condition, which causes slowed movements, tremors, balance problems and much more. Experts predict that the number of cases of PD are expected to triple in the next 20 years; we must explore and gain a better understanding of the recent medical research discoveries to better treat individuals currently suffering from this disease. Dr. Zeine has been leading a movement to explore how medical cannabis can become part of a treatment plan for patients with neurodegenerative diseases, including PD. Her focus has been on pulling experts from across the world to bring their findings to places that may still have legal restrictions on investigating this drug. Her work can be found in the SCOPUS-indexed book, Medical Cannabis and the Effects of Cannabinoids on Fighting Cancer, Multiple Sclerosis, Epilepsy, Parkinson's, and Other Neurodegenerative Diseases (ISBN: 978166845652).
