A new photo editing app, Lensa AI, has sparked recent controversy around the ethics of artificial intelligence using other people’s original work to generate new images. For under $8 USD, the app’s new “magic avatars” feature allows users to generate 50 avatars, or generated portraits in an assortment of digital art styles. Many argue that this immensely popular and affordable custom artwork comes at a cost – the integrity of art. Digital artists’ work is being used by this AI to generate these images, creating forgeries of artists’ work that they took years to master. Artists have likened the situation currently impacting the digital visual art community to the impact the music industry faced years ago at the hands of companies like Napster. To better understand the ethical dilemmas created by today's ever-changing technologies and how these issues continue to affect individuals, companies, and society, more research is needed. According to
NBC News, days after illustrator Kim Jung Gi died in October, a former game developer created an AI model that generates images in the artist’s unique ink and brush style. The creator said the model was an homage to Kim’s work, but it received immediate backlash from other artists. Ortiz, who was friends with Kim, said that the artist’s “whole thing was teaching people how to draw,” and to feed his life’s work into an AI model was “really disrespectful.” This is just one example how the use of AI needs to be monitored better, so artists' whose works are being used get the recognition that they deserve.
