From Your Mailbox to Your Computer: The Australian Post Office Goes Digital

By IGI Global on May 14, 2010
In an effort to keep up with the shift from traditional mail to the digital age, the Australian Post has announced a 5 year plan to concentrate on customer-centered activities. A focus will be placed on E-Services, as well as parcel delivery, business-to-business correspondence, and retail amenities. They plan to use the growth in parcels to mitigate the decline in letters being sent through their Postal Services division, revamp and zero in on stores across the country as part of the Retail Services division, continue services in courier and logistics through the Express Distribution Services division, and create a strong presence in the development of the e-Services division.

Managing Director and CEO of the Australia Post, Ahmed Fahour explained, "…e-Services would be a dedicated new business incubator focusing on opportunities such as secure, identity-verified, digital communications, e-commerce initiatives and other services that can be offered electronically, to complement Australia Post's physical network."

Fahour hopes that the shift in activity will create a useable and endurable company that will be able to move forward with the changing times. "The new organization structure is designed to unlock the depth of talent within Australia Post which will be developed and rewarded for sustainable outcomes," Mr Fahour said (www.psnews.com.au/Page_psn2152.html).

The Post Office electronic services are just one example of the growth of digital offerings explained in the recently released multi-volume book by IGI Global, an information science and technology publisher, Electronic Services: Concepts, Methodologies, Tools and Applications.

This three-volume set, collectively composed by the Information Resources Management Association, USA (IRMA), is organized into eight distinct sections, providing the most wide-ranging coverage of e-services aspects such as: fundamental concepts and theories; development and design methodologies; tools and technologies; utilization and application; organizational and social implications; managerial impact; critical issues; and emerging trends.

As a comprehensive collection of research on the latest findings related to using technology to provide various services, the book provides a complete understanding of the development of applications and concepts in electronic services. Given the vast number of issues concerning usage, failure, success, policies, and strategies of electronic services in organizations, it addresses the demand for a resource that encompasses the most pertinent research in electronic services development, deployment, and impact.

The Information Resources Management Association, USA (IRMA) is a research-based professional organization dedicated to advancing the concepts and practices of information resources management in modern organizations.
