Open Access
Funding Resources

Find below a comprehensive list of Open Access Funding resources available for researchers to secure funds for their various OA publications. For questions about OA funding, please contact our Open Access Division at openaccessadmin@igi-global.com.
Crowdfunding
Did you know that you can take a crowdfunding approach to OA publishing and have multiple funding bodies supporting your publication? No matter where the funding is secured from, the full amount does not have to come from just one source. If an editor is looking to publish a full open access book for instance, a portion of the funding may come from their institution’s library while the other portion is secured from a government funding agency. This concept can be applied to full books, full journals, journal special issues, journal articles, and book chapters. Multiple funders can support new works and/or the retrospective opening of publication projects so that work previously published under standard access can be converted to open access.
There are a number of crowdfunding platforms that authors and editors can use to generate funding for their publication projects – examples include: Kickstarter and Unglue.it, which are specifically designed to engage readers and provide funding to support publications.

Funding Lists
  • The OA Journal Funds is a list of funds that support OA journals, maintained by the OA community at large through the Open Access Directory (OAD). The funds may be hosted by universities, research centers, foundations, or government agencies.
  • Co-Action Publishing is an Open Access scholarly publisher providing a list of universities and institutes with central funds to cover costs for OA publication fees, and of funders willing to pay these fees or that allow researchers to use part of their funds to pay for OA publication.
  • SPARC (the Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition) is an international alliance of academic and research libraries working to create a more open system of scholarly communication that provides a list of campus-based OA publishing funds in North America.
  • The Compact for Open-Access Publishing Equity provides a list of universities that have pledged to support fees for OA publication for articles written by its faculty and published in fee-based OA journals and for which other institutions would not be expected to provide funds.
IGI Global’s Open Access Agreements and Transformative Options
The Open Access movement has been an ongoing uncertainty for libraries, institutions, and researchers. IGI Global is committed to eliminating this uncertainty by providing sustainable and flexible options for institutions, libraries, and other entities to participate in Open Access Agreements and Transformative options (including Read & Publish and Publish & Read Models).
How to Choose a Funding Source
Some important questions to ask as you determine which funding sources to approach are:
  1. What are their specific objectives and criteria?
  2. What do they offer?
  3. Who are their predominant stakeholders?
  4. Who are serving as the reviewers, board members, or panel members?
  5. Will you have freedom to publish and what are the policies surrounding ownership of intellectual property rights?
  6. Are there any other special requirements or policies?
Also, consider whether or not the funding source is one that your institution would be willing to collaborate and/or partner with. Checking with your university grants office on any conditions they have is very important.
