Abstract

Our material lives and comfort have increased as a result of industrialization and urbanization, but changes in land use and land cover pattern in metropolitan areas have diminished vegetative covers. Many problems arise due to decline in vegetation such as urban heat islands, global warming, air pollution, and so on. Several efforts are in vogue to address these issues, but adoption of green roofs is one of the most eco-friendly concepts in India. This natural solution plays a key role in urban transformation towards a sustainable environment by improving the urban environment and lowering the urban heat island effect. In this chapter, prefabricated layers with the growth medium were explained to build the green roof. Both soil (sandy or clayey) and soilless (cocopeat or compost) media were utilized to raise the vegetative layers. The depth of the substrate determines whether the green roof system is intensive or extensive, and based on this, the crop for growing on the green roof is chosen.
