Abstract

Towards the end of the 19th century, Russian society began to change dramatically. Those who are only serving in the church are attracted to the clergy estate. Persons of other classes could join the ranks of the clergy if there were not enough persons of a clergy rank for the corresponding position, provided there was a leave certificate from peasant or city society. The clergy, awarded orders, acquire noble rights: the White clergy receive the hereditary nobility, and the Black clergy had the opportunity to transfer property by inheritance along with the order. Clerics compiled various kinds of statistical documents for secular and spiritual authorities and kept metric books and confessional sheets. An important characteristic of the clergy was the educational level.
