Abstract

The materials of the study show that the church in the 19th-early 20th centuries was an influential spiritual and moral force. The merit of the church consisted in the fact that it was actually the only institution conducting social work. In the 19th-early 20th centuries, the church was an ally of the autocracy, pursuing a pro-government policy to disseminate loyal ideas in Russian society, which was expressed in exercising control over the education system, as well as the all of public life. These scholars were of the opinion that a pilgrimage, even to a nearby monastery, is not rest and entertainment, but self-denial and bodily labor, which believers use to save the soul. The purpose of the pilgrims was not a cognitive goal (i.e., receiving information) although during the pilgrimage they acquired new knowledge.
