Abstract

Toys, items used for play, are ubiquitous in India, where countless varieties are made from a wide range of materials such as wood, metal, rubber, fabric, fiber, polymer, and wood pulp. Gujarat, in particular, has a long history of cloth dolls called dhinglas and dhinglis, which are constructed from scraps of fabric known as thigdas or patchwork. Appliqué, a needlework technique in which smaller pieces of fabric are attached to a larger piece to create a picture or pattern, has been used in India since the period when Muslim women and indigenous communities such as Kathi, Mahajan, and Rabari nomads of north Gujarat produced large canopies, hangings, friezes, bullock-covers (Jhul), and tents for ox-carts with appliquéd human and animal figures. In recent times, Ahmedabad's appliqué artisans have also started making soft toys. This paper investigates the potential of Gujarati appliqué-based toys as educational toys for novel toy production, supporting India's traditional arts and crafts.
