Abstract

Microcomputers have rapidly multiplied in all businesses, but guidance for managing the use of these tools is conflicting and confusing. The purpose of this practitioner-oriented paper is to clear away some of the conceptual fog. Three key observations are discussed: 1.) Personal computing is often not “personal”; 2.) Personal computing is not merely “computing”; 3. ) The opportunities and risks of personal computing must be in balance. Different personal computing domains - individual, functional unit, and organizational - represent different opportunities and risks, and hence dictate different management approaches. The benefits of microcomputer usage in organizations can go well beyond individual efficiencies. When properly managed, this activity can directly contribute to an organization’s most critical activities. Appropriate roles for general managers and information systems professionals are described.
