Introduction

In general, assistive technology for the visually impaired includes screen readers, screen magnifiers for computers, video magnifiers, devices for reading and writing, braille watches and braille printers. With the emerging development, technologies used to assist people with visual impairments are becoming smarter - highly improved as the availability of ICT gadgets becomes abundant. The smart technologies work well with laptop computers, tablet computers, wearable computers, smartphones, GPS system, robots etc. with high affordability and usability. In this book, we gather the emerging researchers to contribute their research on smart technologies that are built to meet the needs of people with visual impairments, thus empowering them to lead a near to normal life in 21st century.

Objective

This book aims to gather the state-of-the-art of smart technologies related research, applications and cases worldwide, to serve the researchers, educators and caretakers who are passionate in empowering people with visual impairments to lead a near to normal life in 21st century. The book will enlighten the community of how much has been done worldwide and what are the future research directions.

Target Audience

This book shall benefit the faculty, education professionals, support staff and administrators and researchers in the fields of research for people with visual impairments such as orientation and mobility, training, teaching and learning, assistive solutions etc. In addition, this book will be a great asset to parents, caretakers, healthcare practitioners who deal directly with people with visual impairments. Authors from AWICT conference, are invited to submit their extended papers as book chapters.

Submission Procedure

Each proposal should address one of the listed chapter topics. (Completed chapters should be about 10,000 words in length.) Researchers and practitioners are invited to submit on or before 15 June, 2017, a 500 word manuscript proposal clearly explaining how the proposed chapter will treat the selected topic. Authors of accepted proposals will be notified about the status of their proposals and will be sent chapter organizational guidelines. Full chapters are expected to be submitted by July 30, 2017. All submitted chapters will be reviewed on a double-blind review basis. The book is scheduled to be published by IGI Global, www.igi-global.com, publisher of the IGI Publishing (formerly Idea Group Publishing), Information Science Publishing, IRM Press, CyberTech Publishing, Information Science Reference (formerly Idea Group Reference), and Medical Information Science Reference imprints.
