Computer-mediated communication (CMC) refers to human communication mediated by electronic devices. The development of CMC is so-called because it first applied to those communications that occur via computer-mediated formats (e.g., email, online forums). Technological development has advanced this sort of virtual communication assisted by mobile phones and other devices connected to the Internet. CMC can be broken down into two forms: synchronous and asynchronous. Synchronous CMC provides opportunities for direct communication between involved parties. In other words, they communicate simultaneously (e.g., video chats and FaceTime audio calls). In contrast, asynchronous CMC refers to communication that takes place when the message sender does not receive an immediate response from the recipient (e.g., text messages and emails).

This book is an edited collection of conceptual/ theoretical chapters and research papers on the use of CMC. It is especially interested in proposals for the future use of CMC and recent applications of CMC in different contexts in the world with implications for further development of CMC. The chapters will centre mainly on recent applications of CMC in the fields of education, business, and media.
