Introduction

Indigenous knowledge is regarded as undocumented cultural, local, traditional and community knowledge produced and owned by local people in their specific communities. It is mainly preserved in the memories of elders, and shared or passed on from generation to generation through oral communication, traditional practices and demonstrations.This knowledge has been the basis for agriculture, education, health care and the wide range of other activities that sustain a society and its environment in many parts of the world, for many centuries. However, most of indigenous knowledge is slowly disappearing in indigenous communities worldwide, due to various factors such as death, sickness, memory loss etc. This irreplaceable resource may also be lost forever as a direct result of the pressures of modernization, colonization and globalization. A concern over the loss of indigenous knowledge and that indigenous communities may lose control and rights over their knowledge has thus raised a need for preservation and documentation of this knowledge in digital formats. World organizations such as United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the World Council of Indigenous People have also recognized the need for preservation of indigenous knowledge and they have yet to devise formal, standardized and sustainable practices and proper policies for the purpose. Indigenist thinkers have also advocated for the recovery, promotion and safeguarding of indigenous knowledge systems as important in decolonizing indigenous communities or nations. Digital preservation has become a popular method for valorising, safeguarding and enhancing long-term access to indigenous knowledge in the digital transformation era, characterized by digital globalization and knowledge-based economy. Greater efforts, initiatives, techniques or strategies must therefore be established in different parts of the world to safeguard, document and preserve indigenous knowledge systems for the sustainable development of indigenous communities and remain accessible to future generations. Memory institutions and cultural heritage institutions such as libraries, museums and archives can act as repositories of indigenous knowledge to ensure that this knowledge is properly documented and preserved. Therefore, if cultural heritage institutions and agencies, governments, indigenous communities and all other related stakeholders do not act now, we will lose our cultural heritage and our times will be a new dark age in history. Despite the strategic role that indigenous knowledge also plays in developing modern scientific knowledge and advancing science and technology, many research institutions, indigenous communities, memory institutions and all other relevant stakeholders, around the world, still do not have effective mechanisms in place for proper sharing, documentation and preservation of this tacit knowledge. There is therefore a need to reimagine innovative preservation and knowledge sharing strategies to ensure a sustainable development and long-term access to this vital knowledge or resource.

Objective

The overall objective of this book is to determine how indigenous knowledge can be documented and digitally preserved to benefit indigenous knowledge owners and their communities, and be accessible for future generations. It aims to provide the best practices, innovative strategies, theoretical and conceptual frameworks, and empirical research findings regarding digital preservation and documentation of indigenous knowledge systems, worldwide.

The book will serve as a valuable and useful tool that provide students, academicians and researchers, information professionals, knowledge managers, records managers, indigenous knowledge owners, indigenous communities, librarians, archivists, computer scientists, Information Technology specialists and data curators, sociologists, anthropologists and policy makers in the fields of Library and Information Science, Information Systems, Informatics, Archival Science, Information Technology, Computer Science, Social Science and Anthropology, with the state-of-the art knowledge in preserving and documenting indigenous knowledge systems

Submission Procedure

Researchers and practitioners are invited to submit on or before November 5, 2022, a chapter proposal of 1,000 to 2,000 words clearly explaining the mission and concerns of his or her proposed chapter. Authors will be notified by November 19, 2022 about the status of their proposals and sent chapter guidelines.Full chapters are expected to be submitted by March 5, 2023, and all interested authors must consult the guidelines for manuscript submissions at https://www.igi-global.com/publish/contributor-resources/before-you-write/ prior to submission. All submitted chapters will be reviewed on a double-blind review basis. Contributors may also be requested to serve as reviewers for this project.

Note: There are no submission or acceptance fees for manuscripts submitted to this book publication, Digital Preservation and Documentation of Global Indigenous Knowledge Systems. All manuscripts are accepted based on a double-blind peer review editorial process.
