Introduction

Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are business enterprises with revenues, assets, or staff counts below a specified threshold. These businesses are frequently cited as examples of how emerging economies might achieve their growth objectives. Thus, SMEs play a crucial role in many developing economies, ability to generate and maintain both employment and income. SMEs play a major role in most economies, particularly in developing countries. Although the variables that constrained SMEs have gained traction in enterprise development and business management research, less emphasis has been paid to how their multidimensional interactions can impair the sustainability and expansion of SMEs in emerging economies. It stands to reason that the extent to which these elements play a role differs from place to place, nation to nation, and continent to continent. However, extant literature shows that as competition and innovation intensify in the global business market, many SMEs in developing countries are constrained by external forces that hinder the sustainability of these businesses.. SMEs have been facing many barriers while trying to sustain and grow. Despite these obstacles, SMEs are still expected to address the challenges of job creation, sustainable economic growth, equitable distribution of income and the overall stimulation of economic development.
