Introduction

Major conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East have drastically altered the geopolitical landscape far beyond what any nation had expected in the past. In turn, these new realities have highly influenced international business operations that will have long-term geoeconomic consequences for advanced and emerging markets alike. These statements are already evident in matters such as the expansion of the NATO military alliance in Europe, the decoupling of Russia from the global economy via severe sanctions, and hindered national growth amidst rising consumer prices and increasing food shortages that transcend those created by the Covid-19 pandemic. One must also consider the looming crisis in Taiwan regarding China's attempts to retake the island as well as the very recent national elections in the USA in which controversial Donald Trump won a second term as President. Although geoeconomics is a term related to geopolitics, the difference between the two exists in the fact that the former is the study of the spatial, temporal, and political aspects of economies and resources while the latter is the study of the effects of economic geography on international politics. The implication of both concepts on international trade is massive changes in activities within the field that can reverse the positive macroeconomic performance of the global economy developed to date. The long-term effects on individuals, companies, nations, and regions are self-evident. Geoeconomics and geopolitics significantly impact international business because they shape the environment in which business organizations operate, influencing trade flows, investment decisions, supply chains, and market opportunities. Some examples include trade policies and agreements, foreign direct investment (FDI), market access and consumer demand, and technological/industrial policies. Therefore, understanding geoeconomics and geopolitics is crucial for businesses to navigate risks, capitalize on opportunities, and develop resilient strategies in a complex international landscape.
