Introduction

Modern economic anthropology is a subfield of anthropology that examines how economic systems, behaviors, and practices are embedded in and influenced by cultural, social, political, and environmental contexts. It seeks to understand the diverse ways in which people produce, exchange, distribute, and consume goods and services, going beyond the frameworks of classical economics by emphasizing the interplay of culture, values, and power dynamics. The profession has a complex relationship with the general discipline of economics of which it is highly critical due to the former's focus on the sum of market transactions carried out by rational individuals deciding how to allocate their resources among the various things on offer that would satisfy their desires. In essence, while traditional economics emphasizes universal principles, market efficiency, and formal systems, economic anthropology highlights the diversity, cultural specificity, and embedded nature of economic behavior. Together, they offer complementary perspectives with economics providing broad models and quantitative analysis and anthropology offering deep cultural insights and critique.
