Introduction

Tuberculosis (TB) is endemic in many countries, and people with untreated or poorly treated infectious TB are the source of transmission. Although recent decades have witnessed increased efforts in the fight to end TB, fundamental gaps are hampering these efforts, particularly in resource-constrained settings and in settings with a high burden of disease. Unless TB is considered when individuals attend healthcare services, diagnosis will be delayed or missed altogether, and effective TB infection prevention and control (IPC) measures (including early effective treatment) might not be in place.

Objective

This book is complementary to the overall Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) pracitices and regulations of the Health Ministries and specialised institutions, like corerctional services and old age homes. The book is meant to assist in the establishment of a scientific framework for TB infection prevention and control (TB-IPC) in health facilities, as well as in those congregate, public and community settings where the potential for transmission of TB is likely to be high. They provide both technical and operational guidance and also detail and prioritize the necessary managerial activities and administrative controls at all levels of the health system.

Target Audience

This book is intended for use by everyone including frontline health care workers; health system officials responsible for TB, HIV/AIDS and IPC programmes, managers of hospital services in the public and private sectors; officials of the prison, police and military services; managers of private and state-owned business enterprises and companies and managers responsible for the housing conditions and work environment of their workers. Indeed Everyone.
