Introduction

Realizing Children's Rights in a Global Context: The Reggio Emilia Approach is an edited book that provides interdisciplinary professionals around the globe with essential collection of chapters focused on the application of the Reggio Emilia approach to the rights of children. This construct resonates with a human rights-based philosophy that rejects the image of the child as passive and submissive in favor of viewing childhood as a distinctive period and each child as a human being, citizen, and unique individual with their own enforceable rights. The focus on asserting children’s rights reflects the shift in our understanding of children and childhood and is mirrored in the provisions of the United Nations (UN) Convention of the Rights of the Child (CRC) and the UN Convention of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) (UN, 1989; 2006). History, philosophy, and myriad of research associated with the Reggio Emilia approach eighty+ years after its foundation have the potential to support an interdisciplinary approach that highlights what our responsibilities are as a society for children and young people at this time (Edwards, Gandini, & Forman, 2012; Rinaldi, 2021). The Reggio Emilia educational project – thinking evolved with an entire community, together with pedagogistas, teachers, atelieristas, cooks, auxiliary staff and parents. The book promotes a pragmatic and applied approach that harnesses the global rights discourse and the Reggio Emilia experience to benefit children and their families, the community, as well as early childhood professionals.
