Introduction

The swift advance of artificial intelligence (AI) is revolutionizing how educators and institutions approach language teaching, offering innovative ways to enrich English language instruction. Personalized learning platforms, adaptive assessments, and intelligent tutoring systems all promise to transform classroom experiences. Yet this technological frontier also prompts vital questions about pedagogy, ethics, learner engagement, and human agency. Human-Centered Approaches to AI-Enhanced English Language Learning and Teaching explores these opportunities and challenges, spotlighting the enduring importance of empathy, cultural sensitivity, creativity, and critical thinking. By gathering insights from a broad range of research and classroom experiences, this book illustrates how AI can be incorporated in ways that uphold—and even amplify—the human dimension of teaching and learning.

Objective

This book provides a comprehensive, interdisciplinary look at how AI technologies can be ethically and effectively embedded in English language education. Drawing on empirical studies, theoretical frameworks, and case-based analyses, it emphasizes the need to center learners’ values, experiences, and well-being within AI-enhanced approaches. Contributors address not only the technical facets of AI, but also the pedagogical, cultural, and social contexts that shape its impact. By bridging the gap between technological capability and genuine educational benefit, the book seeks to demonstrate how AI can serve as a powerful tool—reinforcing rather than displacing the essential human elements that define successful language teaching and learning.

Target Audience

This book targets a wide-ranging audience of professionals and scholars interested in the intersection of AI and language education. English language teachers, curriculum developers, educational technologists, and researchers will gain new insights into AI’s potential to transform classroom practice. Policy makers, school administrators, and other decision-makers charged with technology adoption can utilize the book’s findings to shape informed strategies. Software developers and educational technology specialists will also benefit from understanding the pedagogical and ethical considerations critical to designing effective AI-driven learning tools.
