Abstract

MI-172 helicopters are a variant of MI-17/171 helicopters. These helicopters were inducted in the organization, which was originally designed and tuned to the MI-17/171 series helicopters. Since the induction was not premeditated, it resulted in diverse problems that have accumulated over a period of 3 years. This chapter focuses on the defect trend analysis and identification of root causes of the accumulated problems. Technical and flying data is collected from the user Squadron and analyzed by statistical tools. The chapter is helpful in eradicating the existing problems and suggesting pragmatic solutions for an overall improvement of the maintenance setup.

Methodology

Flying and defects related data of MI-172 helicopters is composed for a period of three (3) years for the entire fleet of three (3) helicopters. Defects are categorized under the five (5) trades of helicopter i.e. Engine, Airframe, Electrical, Radio and Instrument. The data is used for defect trend analysis, relationship between flying hours and defects and detailed evaluation of root causes of various snags in the maintenance setup. The sequence which is followed for this study is shown as Figure 1.

The data is arranged in Microsoft Office Excel Data Sheet in a tabulated form having the following variables:

  • 1.

    Date of defect (Month/Year)

  • 2.

    Details of defect

  • 3.

Major trade of defect (Helicopter System)

  • 4.

Assessment that whether the encountered defect can arise on MI-17/171 series or not?

  • 5.

Is any component replacement involved in the rectification process or not?

  • 6.

Irrespective of the fact that whether any component is used for rectification or not, is it available in the stock?

  • 7.

Whether the requisite Technical Manual is available in the maintenance setup?

  • 8.

Whether the requisite Technical Expertise is available in the maintenance setup?
