Abstract
Magnetorheological elastomers (MREs), characterized by their adaptive mechanical properties in the presence of a magnetic field, have witnessed a transformative evolution in recent years. MREs, originally recognized for their variable stiffness and damping capabilities, are now poised to revolutionize the domain of actuators. The present discourse elucidates the pivotal advancements that place MREs at the vanguard of next-generation actuator technologies. Emphasis is laid on the microstructural dynamics, optimization strategies for enhanced actuation response, and the integration of MREs in diverse application scenarios. Furthermore, challenges inherent to the practical implementation of MRE-based actuators are addressed, accompanied by prospective solutions underscored by recent research breakthroughs. By holistically examining the trajectory of MREs in actuation, this chapter positions the material as a cornerstone for future technological innovations in the realm of smart systems and devices.
