Abstract

Multidisciplinary collaboration is crucial to sustainable education. It places a strong emphasis on combining many academic disciplines to address complex environmental issues and promote sustainable lifestyles. Students can put their knowledge into practice and raise awareness of the world through community-based learning, corporate partnerships, and international collaborations. The chapter emphasizes effective methods for evaluating the effectiveness and impact of collaborative activities. It highlights how crucial innovation, knowledge sharing, and international cooperation are to building a sustainable future. Social justice, action-oriented learning, and lifetime professional growth are all components of sustainability education. Institutional barriers, cultural differences, and resource constraints impact these cooperative initiatives. Future generations' perceptions of the Earth can be affected via interdisciplinary collaboration and partnerships.

1. Introduction

It is now more important than ever to address global environmental challenges, as evidenced by recent events. In order to achieve a sustainable future, the conventional strategy of discrete disciplinary activities needs to consider the intricate relationships and diverse character of sustainability concerns. In this environment, cross-disciplinary partnerships and collaborations become essential cornerstones of sustainable education. Goi & Ng (2008) state that all evaluated elements must be considered crucial success factors in e-learning for sustainability education. Designing effective and high-quality e-learning programs that effectively address sustainability challenges and engage learners in interdisciplinary collaborations and partnerships for a sustainable future requires a commitment from the institution, practical methodologies, and the learner's perspective. Additionally, companies are learning from their successes and failures in implementing E-learning projects, and the transformative influence of mixed and entirely online delivery techniques on learning is becoming increasingly apparent. The usage of E-learning in a variety of educational contexts is growing as efficient methods for providing online teaching to audiences around the world are still being created and improved (Yahiaoui et al., 2022; Zalat et al., 2021; Nikou & Maslov, 2021; Giannakos et al., 2021). Cross-disciplinary collaborations bring together professionals from several disciplines, including environmental science, engineering, economics, and social sciences, to enable a thorough and holistic understanding of our difficulties. By combining knowledge from several disciplines, educators and students can create novel and workable solutions to pressing problems, including resource depletion, climate change, and environmental degradation (Brodin & Avery, 2020; Klein, 2020; Wisz et al., 2020).

In order to address global sustainability concerns in a more integrated, dynamic, and flexible manner, this chapter examines the significance of fostering interdisciplinary cooperation in sustainability education. Sustainable education can be effectively imparted outside of the traditional classroom. The gap between theoretical and practical application must be closed to give students the abilities and information to make a discernible difference in the world. International collaborations, industrial partnerships, and community-based learning all depend on this goal. Using a community-based learning approach, students can participate in real-world sustainability concerns and projects. Students have invaluable possibilities for experiential learning by taking part in community projects. These exchanges foster cultural sensitivity, empathy, and a greater understanding of the contextual complexity of sustainable development. Through industry-education collaboration, students can have access to the resources and expertise of companies that are actively adopting sustainable practices. Students learn about cutting-edge technologies, environmentally friendly business models, and creative solutions through industry partnerships. Students' impact on sustainability projects is increased by these kinds of interactions, which allow them to use their knowledge directly in the corporate sector (Nyemba et al., 2021; Awasthy et al., 2020; Yu et al., 2020). Since environmental problems transcend national boundaries, tackling global sustainability requires international cooperation. Collaborations across international borders enable the sharing of diverse viewpoints, optimal methodologies, and local and cultural expertise. It trains pupils to participate in international efforts to protect the planet's future by instilling a feeling of global citizenship (UN, 2023; Mariani, 2023).
