Introduction

The Southern Africa region boasts a remarkable cultural and geographical diversity with many countries, ethnic groups, and abundant natural resources. However, this rich composition is affected by challenges that prevent the region's achievement of sustainable development goals (SDGs). These challenges include economic disparities, environmental degradation, and social inequalities, as evidenced by recent studies (Mpofu, 2022; Wang & Huang, 2021). The pursuit of improved living standards for local and disadvantaged communities and the overarching achievement of sustainable growth and development depends on the active engagement of communities through collaborative efforts and robust partnerships among diverse stakeholders (Babu et al., 2020; Eweje et al., 2021). Globally, sustainability has assumed a central role in government interventions. Recent research highlights the wave of collaborative initiatives in Southern Africa to nurture sustainable growth and development (Chitakira et al., 2022; Lindner, 2023). Stakeholders from various sectors have come together with a shared commitment to address the challenges hindering progress towards SDGs within the region (Abiddin et al., 2022).

This chapter stresses the importance of stakeholder engagement and community participation in the success of sustainable development initiatives. These collaborative efforts not only provide local communities with a sense of ownership and empowerment but also leverage their profound knowledge of their unique realities (Mamokhere & Meyer, 2023; Rijal, 2023). Additionally, they serve as catalysts for identifying community needs, mobilizing resources, and devising practical solutions to address pressing issues (Rosen & Painter, 2019). Furthermore, stakeholder engagement and community participation foster social cohesion and inclusivity (Ferreira et al., 2019; Jewett et al., 2021), vital elements for ensuring the success and sustainability of projects. These collaborative efforts and active community involvement also provide mechanisms for conflict resolution, fostering a harmonious environment and enhancing accountability and transparency among the diverse project collaborators (Fiandrino et al., 2022; Sari, 2023; Tejedo-Romero).

This chapter explores stakeholder engagement practices and community participation in initiatives aimed at promoting sustainable growth and development across Southern Africa. At its core, the chapter recognizes the pivotal role played by stakeholders and local communities in shaping the direction and success of sustainable development initiatives.
