Abstract
Transportation has a critical role in society and considerable negative effects on the environment, such as air pollution, land use changes, and greenhouse gas emissions. Especially, the high carbon emissions in the aviation sector increase the importance of studies in the field of sustainability. In this study, an eco-efficiency performance analysis is presented among 14 selected airports from Europe. Four environmental indicators (energy consumption, greenhouse emissions, water consumption, and waste generation) and three value-added indicators (revenue, passenger, and employee) were used for the analysis. The sustainable performance levels of the selected airport were compared with the help of principal component analysis (PCA). The data required for the assessment were obtained from the GRI and annual sustainability reports. Regarding eco-efficiency and clustering analysis, Malta airport emerged as the most eco-efficient and sustainable airport in Europe relying on the indicators and the datasets acquired.
