What is Sharding

Blockchain Technology for Global Social Change
A method of managing a large database. The Blockchain is separated into different “shards,” and each part of the state is stored and processed by different nodes in the network. Each shard only processes a small part of the state and does so in parallel. Blockchain sharding is complicated by the need to maintain security and authenticity amongst a decentralized set of nodes.

Database Systems for Big Data Storage and Retrieval
Distributing data across the nodes in a non-overlapping manner. When this task is done by a system in a manner transparent to the user, it is called auto-sharding. Client-managed sharding refers to data distribution specified through application logic.

New Trends in Databases to NonSQL Databases
It is an organization of information that consists of distributing data among a set of machines so that machines can define roles such as a machine acting as a server and the rest of customers or that all machines act with the same roles.
