Special Issue On Actor-Network Theory in Education

Guest Editors:
Jonathan Tummons, Teesside University, UK
Chris Bigum, Griffith University, Australia

Introduction

During recent years, actor-network theory (ANT) has been used as a conceptual framework to explore a number of different themes in education. Books and articles relating to a number of different kinds of education provision have included studies of full-time undergraduate curricula; analyses of adult literacy education; the organisation and management of educational provision; studies relating to enrolments and admissions in vocational education; and analyses of the organisation of educational programmes across multiple sites. To add to this growing body of work, the International Journal of Actor-Network Theory and Technological Innovation (IJANTTI) invites authors to submit papers for a special issue of the journal, to be published at the end of 2010, which will focus on education.

Objective of the Special Issue

The objective of this special issue is to provide a forum for discussion of the use of ANT as an analytical framework for looking at issues in the field of Education. The articles collected for this issue will add to the growing body of research investigating the value of using actor-network theory as a means of understanding socio-technical phenomena and technological innovation in a variety of fields. In this case: Education.

Recommended Topics

Topics to be discussed in this special issue include (but are not limited to) the following:

  • Case studies, involving ANT or other analytical frameworks, that explore the implementation of technologies (understood in the widest sense) within educational contexts
  • Case studies of the use of ANT to investigate particular educational issues or phenomena
  • Case studies that explore teaching and learning processes through an ANT-informed framework
  • Critiques of ANT in education research
  • Description of research approaches informed by ANT, and the conduct of ANT research in education
