Abstract
This chapter is a comprehensive overview of the potential of the Reggio Emilia approach in diverse settings in South Africa. It traces aspects of the historical legacy of apartheid on education and the ongoing inequalities affecting early childhood education. It highlights ongoing challenges such as limited resources, formalised teaching methods, and disparities related to access. The chapter presents the Reggio Emilia approach as a philosophy of education that focuses on children's rights, agency, creativity, and the significance of learning environments while emphasising the culture of the atelier and the role of the atelierista. Through various case studies of South African schools and communities, it illustrates the transformative potential of this approach, even in under-resourced settings. The chapter underscores the resonance between the Reggio Emilia philosophy and South Africa's aspirations for social justice, advocating for educational reform, and professional development. It acts as a call to action to ensure every child's right to a quality, creative education.
