Abstract

This chapter will use a single personal narrative and case study approach to analyze the challenges often faced by women in higher education and the impact of leadership in influencing the perception of self. A pivotal experience with a transformational leader and engaged mentor was the impetus for deep reflection that shepherded an evolution of individuals, teams, and an entire institution. This defining experience in the author's career will serve as a guide through literature that emphasizes the influence of leadership on individual perceptions and performance, cohesive team formation, and institutional success. The far-reaching effect of transformational leadership will be considered, as those who experience it adopt the practices of effective leadership and bring them to new teams and institutions. This chapter will include a specific focus on the lasting impact positive experiences with leadership and mentoring can have on confidence, achievement, and new leader development among women in higher education.
