Abstract

This chapter posits that the Yoruba language transcends its function as a mere communication tool; it constitutes the very “Cultural DNA” of the Yoruba people. Embedded within the spiritual, philosophical, and socio-political fabric of Yoruba life. The language serves as a crucial repository of identity, a vital conduit for intergenerational cultural continuity, a sophisticated code for indigenous knowledge systems, and a resilient medium for cultural resistance. In an era characterized by globalization and increasing cultural homogenization, the Yoruba language emerges as an indispensable instrument for cultural survival and the maintenance of Yoruba autonomy. This chapter argues that without the active preservation and promotion of this linguistic heritage, the foundational elements of Yoruba identity and culture face an existential threat.
