Abstract

Retailers are under increasing pressure to reduce the negative effects of their activities on the environment, both within and externally. They gradually use various corporate environmental sustainability (CES) initiatives and tactics in order to accomplish this. This analysis of the literature looks at the main factors influencing the retail industry's adoption of CES methods, along with the most popular approaches and advancement indicators. According to our analysis, retailers are mostly driven to adopt CES tactics by the anticipated financial gains, which primarily come from lower costs associated with consuming fewer resources. This, together with the Sustainable Development Goals' (SDGs) growing political traction—particularly SDG 12 on responsible consumption and production—can spur the adoption of CES methods in the retail industry. Reports on sustainability progress will be required of businesses, which will encourage them even more to implement profitable measures or face reputational harm.
