Abstract

In the absence of AI specific legislation in the UK, existing research has been clear in illustrating that Facial Recognition Technologies ('FRT') deliberately disregard fundamental human rights of individuals at the cost of catching and deterring criminals and increasing public safety. Therefore, this chapter argues from a proactive viewpoint and calls for new legal and regulatory frameworks to be passed that directly address the human right issues associated with FRT in policing before they arise. The aim of this chapter is to scope existing literature on FRT used in policing in the UK and its impact on fundamental human rights.
