Abstract

The repercussions of the Russo-Ukrainian War continue to resonate across regions, shaping the geopolitical landscape. One remarkable phenomenon of war is the influx of foreign fighters drawn to the conflict due to a confluence of variegated motivations. However, this influx also injects an element of radicalization due to the presence of far-right and jihadist actors. The fluid and epochal nature of the conflict led powers to create multi-layered grotesque cooperations even with Islamic armed actors. Propelled by a confluence of reasons, these individuals represent a significant factor in the ongoing conflict. As the war grinds on, the study argues that Ukraine—for its survival—is obliged to recruit more and, especially from jihadist elements, to counterbalance fighters on the Russian side. Besides analyzing military strategies and capabilities on both sides, the study also explores the legal and ethical implications of foreign involvement in the war. It delves into the potential for knowledge transfer between armed groups taking sides in the conflict.
