Abstract
The 21st century demands a departure from siloed, outdated educational models and a transition toward integrated, research-based frameworks that empower learners to engage with the complexities of the modern world. The START model, an acronym for (S)yllabus Analysis, (T)racking System Covering Objectives, (A)ssessment Methods, (R)esearch Component Inclusion, (T)esting Through Research, developed by de Silva (2004), represents a pioneering shift in the educational paradigm. By uniting multiple disciplines within a research-intensive, inquiry-driven framework, START fosters intellectual curiosity, equity, and practical problem-solving. It transcends traditional STEM and STEAM approaches by embedding research at its core and redefining the role of the learner as a contributor to knowledge, not a passive recipient. This chapter explores the theoretical underpinnings of the START model, its origins, pedagogical strategies, and practical implementations. It examines how the model addresses global educational inequities, supports transdisciplinary learning, and aligns with 21st-century competencies, including AI integration. Using case studies and de Silva's initiatives, we argue that START is not only innovative but necessary for the cultivation of critical, ethical, and globally competent thinkers in education and beyond.
