EU Energy Security for Sustainability and Sustainable Development: Post-COVID-19 Challenges and Green Opportunities

Abstract

This study reviews the relevant theories and literature on the current scenarios regarding energy security in the European Union (EU). Post-Covid 19 has brought significant changes in global politics and the EU's international governance policies have also been changed in recent years. This chapter describes the EU's effectiveness of a new renewable energy program to fulfil the energy security for the Member States. The chapter explores the EU's search for the world's top energy import destination and potential partner countries to fill the energy security gap after the Russian invasion of Ukraine and post-Covid-19. This study delves into the EU's exploring alternative energy sources such as renewable energy (solar, wind, hydro, etc.), nuclear power, and emerging technologies like hydrogen and geothermal energy. The chapter elaborates a comprehensive overview of challenges facing Europe's energy security, the existing policy landscape, and potential pathways towards a more resilient and sustainable energy future.
