Abstract

With the development of technology, AI has been the subject of intense research in the field of education, with ChatGPT, the adoption of generative AI in education. But generative AI has only gained attention in the last few years. Therefore, there are not many research results on the application of generative AI in flipped classrooms, and there are many questions that need to be explored and verified by researchers. In this study, a flipped classroom combined with generative AI tools to promote personalized learning was studied. A theme in the music course was selected for course design and a pilot study was conducted. The results show that teachers and students have very different views on this research, and this phenomenon is summarized and analyzed, and finally some suggestions are made to help better use generative AI tools to promote personalized learning in the flipped classroom.

Introduction

In the 21st century, there have been rapid development and major changes in the world economy, technology and other fields. If you want to follow the era development trend, education and learning is indispensable. Education provides a large number of talents for the development of various fields and industries in the world. Nowadays, the application of technology in education has been a very important part (Okoye et al., 2023; Mercader & Gairín, 2020). As a result, many higher education institutions have begun to introduce a large number of devices and technologies to assist classroom learning in teaching. Such as digital technology, Internet of Things technology, mobile applications, smart classroom, microclassroom, etc. (Viberg et al., 2023; Stojanovic et al., 2023). The use of these technologies and tools open up new opportunities for education.

At the same time, as the technology of artificial intelligence also began to show its role. With the increasing maturity of AI technology, AI is also applied to all aspects of life, such as medical care, finance, education and so on (Fui-Hoon et al, 2023). Artificial intelligence technology has many hidden uses in the field of education, such as the improvement of teaching effect, the immediacy of teaching feedback, the promotion of personalized learning, and the enhancement of students’ learning initiative (Adiguzel et al, 2023). The emergence of ChatGPT had a huge impact on education.

With the development of technology, mobile electronic devices are becoming more and more indispensable in people’s work and life, especially for students, who spend most of their time even in class. Since it is impossible to stop students from using electronic devices in the classroom, educators can use smart technology to assist students in learning, especially in higher education (Jurayev, 2023).

Because personalized learning can be well adapted to the different differences of learners in various aspects and provide diverse teaching for learners (Cevikbas & Kaiser, 2021), personalized learning has been paid attention by educators for a long time. The emergence of intelligent tutoring leads to the formation of personalized learning (Shemshack & Spector, 2020). Personalized learning is a type of learning, its purpose is to obtain different learning experience in the learning environment according to the individual needs of learners, learning objectives and so on (Shemshack et al, 2021). In personalized learning, educators can clearly analyze the needs of students based on each student's learning preferences, learning abilities, learning processes, learning outcomes, etc. Flexibly tailor the teaching plan for learners from the aspects of teaching methods, teaching objectives, teaching content, teaching results and so on (Raj & Renumol, 2022). While this kind of personalized learning is now possible, it remains one of the biggest challenges in modern education systems (Shemshack & Spector,2020).

Key Terms in this Chapter

Machine Learning: It is an important part of artificial intelligence, in which machines learn and optimize behaviors by analyzing data generated by users’ activities.

Personalized Learning: It is a kind of teaching paradigm that emphasizes students’ subjective status and personality characteristics and guides students to take the initiative and learn more consciously.

Deep Learning: Through the processing and analysis of multi-layer data in machine learning, complex data can be automatically analyzed.

Reinforcement Learning: It is a kind of machine learning, but in this paper, reinforcement learning means that students improve the application of relevant knowledge and strengthen learning objectives by carrying out relevant learning skills or learning behaviors.

Unsupervised Learning: In machine learning, it is a method of self-finding labels for learning; In the pre-class learning section of flipped classroom, students can learn and complete the pre-class test independently.

Generative AI: It is a technology that generates relevant new content based on text information, images, audio, etc. provided by users.

Artificial Intelligence: Usually we call it AI, which is a kind of human through technical means to make the machine have the thinking ability of people.

Flipped Classroom: Contrary to the traditional classroom procedure, the exchange of the contents before and during the class in the traditional classroom makes the students change from the passive learning state to the active learning behavior, and the students are the center of the whole learning process.
