Cities have played a major role in development of civilizations, and enabled people to progress beyond the neolithic. With the advent of the third industrial revolution the cities also started a shift towards a digital evolution. Today an average citizen has easy access to one or more terminals (Smartphone, tablets, laptops etc.) as their medium of using the Internet and technological services. Cities are now becoming smarter with the use of IoT and similar technologies. Smartphones are approaching peak saturation, and the Internet of Things (IoT) is becoming a normal part of our lives. There is a refocus from the technology to its applications and the people it helps. A smart city is one that utilizes information and communications technology in order to improve the quality of the urban services. The Smart City paradigm develops concepts, systems, and applications which are aimed at making city life more efficient, cleaner, safer, and reduce costs. The needs of institutions, companies and citizens about the transportation, economy, environment and energy, public safety and healthcare are some of the plethora of new research initiatives in this field.
Smart Campus
Smart campus is an integral part of the smart city paradigm. Campuses can be made smart by having smart attendance, timetable, parking, energy management, smart learning and education. In a developing country like India emphasis should be laid on education.
The smart campus is developing an overall community in colleges and universities campuses. The modules which come in a city, most of them can easily be adapted in a smart campus. This is because the environment is much more controlled and cross-functional issues are comparatively less. The value of learning, education, obtaining a degree needs to be explained. The campus experience should be improved and elevated. Techniques need to be developed which encourage students to engage more deeply with campus life. Smart campus also deals with the issues of having something distinctive which distinguishes your institution and makes it a place that students, faculty and researchers will want to be a part of. Smart campus tries to solve the issue of giving students a compelling reason to choose to stay on that campus in comparison to other institutions. More and more colleges and universities are now placing technology front and center in their strategies to improve their campuses and develop a smarter campus. Technology infrastructure including wired, wireless devices, IoT sensors, etc., forms a utility and a platform for new applications and experiences, that make a campus smart. These are being used to improve the campus and the experiences they provide, in order to make their institution stand out from the crowd. In this way, technology is playing a huge role in shaping the campus experience.
