Carlos Campos

Carlos Campos completed his Occupational Therapy degree at the Polytechnic University of Porto (ESS-P.Porto), starting his career as a junior researcher at the Psychosocial Rehabilitation Laboratory - Neurocognition Group (2013-14). After working in a psychosocial rehabilitation setting in Porto, he moved to the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro to complete his Master's in Psychiatry and Mental Health, working together with the Panic and Respiration Laboratory - Neuroscience Group (2016-17). He finished the Neurosciences Ph.D. at the University of Porto in 2023, developing his research project at the Laboratory of Neurophysiology. Carlos recently started his collaboration with the HEI-Lab at Lusófona University where he was able to attain two competitive grants as a principal investigator (FCT 2022 and BIAL Foundation 2022). Altogether, this educational and work trajectory has allowed Carlos Campos to develop critical abilities within several academic domains. First, he has developed a strong pedagogic background through his 8-year teaching experience at ESS-P.Porto (2014 - until now), where he presented lectures and practical classes addressing several neuroscience-related topics such as brain stimulation, biofeedback, social brain networks, rehabilitation and neuroplasticity. This collaboration also allowed him to conduct other important pedagogic activities such as student research supervision (>35 undergraduates and 6 masters) and building materials to support students (e.g., hands-on training protocols, pedagogic manual). Secondly, his vast pedagogic experience is widely interconnected with the know-how stemming from his research activities. Carlos Campos has strong expertise in behavioural neurosciences, attained not only by his Neurosciences Doctoral Program but also due to the wide array of advanced training activities for research completed at top-notch European institutions. These activities encompassed advanced courses addressing Neuroimaging and Brain Stimulation (Donders Institute), Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (Oxford University), Psychophysiological Modelling (European Society of Social and Affective Neuroscience), and Resting-state fMRI Functional Connectivity (Spanish Society of Psychophysiology and Cognitive and Affective Neuroscience), as well as lab rotations for training in specific methodologies such as heartbeat-evoked potentials (Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München) and brain stimulation computational modelling (Universidade Santiago de Compostela). Carlos Campos is an up-and-coming researcher in Portugal that has already successfully attained competitive funding as a principal investigator (2 funded projects), besides having vast experience as a team member in funded research projects (FCT, BIAL Foundation, COMPETE2020) and a solid track record as a highly productive young researcher (>30 peer-reviewed papers; h-index since 2018= 16). Finally, his pedagogic and research expertise is complemented by his training and work experience with community projects, which have allowed him to design and implement several impactful projects in the early stages of his career. These projects addressed the social integration of people with mental health conditions and were awarded funding by several organizations (Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, Porto City Hall, Social Responsibility Programs), allowing him to develop a strong network within the Porto community. Moreover, Carlos completed a comprehensive bootcamp on social entrepreneurship (Portuguese Social Entrepreneurship Institute -Social Business School) which has allowed him to develop advanced insights on the design and implementation of community projects. This know-how was then used for his teaching activities at ESS-P.Porto where he addressed topics such as social problem identification, social investment, project sustainability, partnership management, among others.
