Ellen Wendy Kaplan

Ellen W. Kaplan is Professor Emeritus of Theatre at Smith College; Fulbright Scholar (Costa Rica), Fulbright Senior Specialist (Romania, Hong Kong); actress, director and playwright. She has directed in China, Israel, Costa Rica, Puerto Rico and across the US; was guest professor at Tel Aviv University; Hong Kong University; Chinese University of Hong Kong; University of Costa Rica; University of Theatre and Film in Bucharest; and currently at University of Kurdistan/Hewler, and taught English virtually at Rojava University in Syria. In 2022, Kaplan led workshops with Yezidi IDPs in northern Iraq, which she wrote about in Humanities Journal (2022). She works with at-risk communities, including pre-GED learners, women in prison, and death row inmates. Her forthcoming book is Chasing the Demons: Theatre Responds to Social Trauma (Routledge).
