Hilde Tørnby

Hilde Tørnby is Associate Professor at Oslo Metropolitan University, Norway. Her research interests are related to literacy practices in teacher education and her previous experience as a teacher. Art-based research, transformation, reader-response theory and aesthetic approaches to meaning-making are some of the theoretical frameworks for her work. Young adult literature, literature didactics and aesthetic approaches are main areas of her research. In particular picturebook research is one of great interests are due to the artistic aspects the two modalities that the visual and verbal represent. Furthermore, she is presently engaged in a largescale research project where critical thinking in young learners is investigated through the lens of reading picturebooks and newspaper articles in primary school. Her most recent publications are Picturebooks in the classroom (2020), Visual Literacy in Young Learners (2020), Citizenship and Democracy (2022) and Picturebooks as Starting Points for Critical Thinking (2022). In addition she is a painter who has had several solo and collective exhibitions.
