Abstract

This chapter is aimed to analyze the relationships between environmental sustainability, urban ecosystems, and green innovation. The method employed is the critical analytical review of literature and further discussion on the issues focusing the city´s experience on managing the formulation, generation, development, implementation and evaluation of new behaviors and ideas in green innovation. It is concluded that the green innovation is directly related with the environmental sustainability and urban ecosystems. The interest of this analysis lies in providing support to urban settlements in managing the risks inherent in green area innovation, incremental or radical as a community’s management would experience in relation to the environmental sustainability in urban ecosystems.

Green Innovation And Environmental Sustainability

To address the challenges of urban development, innovative urban planning and design must have a green innovation orientation, innovative and interconnected development stages, and processes (Adams, 2006; Blewitt, 2012). The urban innovation process is inherent to the practice of sustainable development. The conceptual framework for innovation in urban green areas is based on a multifaceted process where key types of environmental development are in interaction, such as natural resources, materials, energy, and pollution, among others, that have an impact on the environment at different levels. stages: analysis, formulation, implementation, elimination, and evaluation (Roy et al., 1996).

Environmental sustainability is an integral part of the innovation of green areas that requires greater demands for ecological performance from eco-efficient green technologies with reduction and mitigation of negative green environmental impacts.

Innovation in environmental sustainability modifies the competitive dynamics of urban spaces supported by the fact that innovation modifies the impacts of environmental sustainability through interaction with some characteristics of the external environment (Moyano-Fuentes et al., 2017).

Urban spaces driven by the different types of innovation that are enablers that lead to higher levels of environmental sustainability and have potentially diverse possibilities for improving the ecosystem. Incentive systems for different types of innovation in environmental sustainability are affected by regulations (Kemp et al., 2000).
