Abstract

When the world began to be prepared to return to normalcy after months of disturbances with the pandemic, a new worrying context appeared with the Russia-Ukraine crisis. This conflict brought implications in the different socioeconomic dimensions, specifically those related to energy prices and food chains. This research aims to analyse the literature highlights about the several interlinkages between the farming sector and the Russia-Ukraine conflict. For that, 106 documents from the Web of Science (Core Collection) were considered for the topics “Russia-Ukraine conflict,” or “Russia-Ukraine crisis,” or “Russia-Ukraine war,” and “agricultur*,” on a search carried out on 04 January 2023. This information was assessed through bibliometric analysis, systematic review, and factor-cluster analyses. The topics associated with the Russia-Ukraine conflict and the agricultural sectors have attracted the attention of researchers, but there is still a field to be explored.

Introduction

The Russia-Ukraine conflict appears as an additional exogenous shock for the socioeconomic context worldwide (Abu Hatab, 2022) with risks of systemic contamination (Qureshi et al., 2022). Inflation seems to be one of the major problems, namely for the most vulnerable economies (Aharon & Qadan, 2022), as well as the volatility in the financial (Beraich et al., 2022) and commodity markets (Fang & Shao, 2022). The stock market efficiency (Gaio et al., 2022), international monetary system stability (Miao & Fei, 2022), international stock markets volatility (Mu et al., 2022), global economic uncertainty (Shen & Hong, 2023) and the spillovers among agricultural commodity markets (Just & Echaust, 2022) are also challenges.

These scenarios jointly with the supply chain constraints are threats to the international conjuncture, namely to food security (Ben Hassen & El Bilali, 2022), global food crisis (Elbasuney et al., 2022), food chains (Jagtap et al., 2022), including in China (Li & Song, 2022), energy markets dynamics (Mo & Wang, 2022), including for US (Shepard & Pratson, 2022), investors priorities (Singh et al., 2022) and trade sustainability (Cabelkova et al., 2022). There are specific impacts, such as those related to broiler producers (Myeki et al., 2022).

The consequences of this crisis are economic, but have other dimensions, such as those related to health (Chaaya, Thambi, et al., 2022), environment (Rawtani et al., 2022), refugees (Lewtak et al., 2022), migrations (Subramaniam & Rajoo, 2022), dietary patterns (Yazbeck et al., 2022), opinions (Ibar-Alonso et al., 2022) and comments (Lewandowska-Tomaszczyk, 2022) about current topics. This conflict promote also discussions of the laws, specifically the naval ones (Fink, 2022), corporate decisions (Tosun & Eshraghi, 2022), sustainability of the agricultural systems (Yang & Liu, 2022) and food resilience (Sun et al., 2022). In any case, these events open always alternatives (Huang et al., 2022), opportunities and challenges for the investors (Huang et al., 2023) in an asymmetric way (Nerlinger & Utz, 2022).

Another question is about the perception of the citizens about the news related to this conflict, which is an additional ingredient in these frameworks (Alyukov, 2022), about the role of the states in these processes (Dylan & Maguire, 2022) and the roots of the crisis (Henrikson, 2022), including the religious (Jha et al., 2022).

International organisations have a crucial role in world stability (Anil & Kumar, 2022), however not always without failures (Murithi, 2022). Other organisations have also their influence (Deniz & Ozgur, 2022). The policy instruments may have here a fundamental contribution, namely in the European Union in terms of energy and climate measures (Costantini et al., 2022). The digital transition may contribute significantly to deal with the difficulties created by recent events (Nakandala et al., 2022), including in the food sector (Martinho et al., 2022).
