Abstract

This chapter describes the application of the Intervention Mapping (IM) framework through a case study of the development of an in-house medication adherence mHealth app for oral anticancer medications (called MedFC). Using the behavioral intervention frameworks described previously, this chapter discusses how patients' medication adherence needs, mobile app usage, perceptions and experiences with the prototype helped inform the development of MedFC. Through iterative evaluations, this chapter will illustrate how a mHealth intervention can be developed in a holistic manner, involving its target audience in the design process.

User Involvement In Medfc Development

In order to improve the quality and usability of MedFC, the UCD theory was adopted, which involved target end users at every stage of the development. Starting from the needs assessment phase, reasons for non-adherence and preferred strategies to help improve adherence were sought from patients with cancer on OAMs. The feedback from users were used to inform the design of MedFC through the adaptation of the relevant behavioral intervention strategies. Moreover, target end users were involved in the iterative testing phase of MedFC to determine the usability of the its user interface and features, and its acceptability among patients and caregivers.
