Abstract

In the area of virtual reality, there are some critical issues that need to deal with accessing, managing, and sharing the wide amount of information which is increasing day by day. The information produced is not in a form that machines can easily process. So, there is a need to develop and design techniques which can easily process the information and can be embedded with the techniques used for virtual reality. This chapter gives an insight into the various applications of virtual reality, and a comparative analysis of the global healthcare of virtual reality systems market by geography in the existing market scenario.

Introduction

In view of technological expansion, the area of virtual reality is gaining popularity day by day. virtual reality provides simulated environment in which user can behave like an actor. The environment provided by virtual reality helps in interacting with the artificial world which actually does not physically exists in real world.

In technical sense, it can be implemented in the area of cognitive science, robotics, healthcare, psychology, military, gaming, artificial intelligence, etc. The growth of virtual reality is due to the increasing popularity of computer science domain (inherent capacity of computers, ability to perform image processing, ability to create simulated and animated environment) in which there is a need to interact without the intervention of real outside world.

In general, virtual reality does not exist on its own but its foundation is based on Science and Technology in the field of Information and Communication. Its scope is not limited to information and communication however it is extended to number of other applications in various domains. Some of the domains in which virtual reality helps in enhancement of the domain are as follows:

  • Digital Model creations in simulated environment using various algorithms. The algorithms applied are analyzed in terms of time and space complexity which helps in the development of the enhanced models.

  • Automatic organ creation for human beings with various inability.

  • Psychological observations in the behavioural science theory development in virtual simulated environment.

  • Designing and development of Ergonomics models having conceptual knowledge that helps in enhancement of techniques used while accessing the virtual simulated environment etc.

In the area of virtual reality, there are some critical issues that need to deal like accessing, managing, sharing, the wide amount of information which is increasing day by day. The information produced is not in the form that can be easily processed by the machines. So, there is a need to develop and design the techniques which can easily process the information and can be embedded with the techniques used for virtual reality.

In fact, the artificial reality is the domain which is the foundation of virtual reality. The dealing of artificial reality with the virtual reality comes into existence when artificial reality deals with data and visualization. The data is the enormous amount of information present for various users. Visualization deals with the use of the data in different context. This is also called contextualization. This helps in displaying data with the context of the information which helps the user in the field of virtual reality. In general, virtual reality enhances the visualization in various domains like cognitive science, neurology, psychology, medical science, robotics, etc.

Virtual reality, mainly supports almost every human activity. In other words, it can be said that virtual reality can be applied to almost all the domains. VR is the foundation of all the domains connected to computer science including animation, entertainment, 3D technology etc.

The thin line that connects virtual reality to the computing domain is also known as Computer Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW). The name comes from the fact that computers have been designed to support all the human activity which are itself inherently cooperative. This idea leads to the origin of new computing domain named as CSCW which mainly deals with the interactions of human with computers which in turn is the core of the virtual reality. The domain CSCW on virtual reality is also categorized on the basis of the type of interaction. To implement virtual reality, the interaction with the system can be contemporal or sequential in terms of time. Also, it can be collocated or distributed in terms of space.

Although, virtual reality applications can be found in every beneficial domain, but its impact on the healthcare has been found tremendously increasing. Like, the implementation of groupware to design a decision support system which helps in finding the health issues related to a patient. In the decision support system, the user (i.e. patient) can input the symptoms in the form of text which is data. This data is further visualized on the basis of the hierarchical structure developed by the implementation of virtual reality while designing the DSS. The DSS in context with virtual reality provides the user the combination of weighted average of all the relationships of the symptoms formed.
