Abstract

Several smart cities have been established all over the world and versatile infrastructure is being developed to enhance the resident experience. Environmentally friendly urban infrastructure development is critical for societal health and overall development. Solar smart benches are now gaining popularity in smart cities and indeed considered as part of essential infrastructure for futuristic smart cities. They produce electricity during the daytime and provide various services to users. This chapter presents engineering design and analysis of solar smart benches. Contemporary smart features have been considered and design alternatives have been developed. Technical specifications for the designs have been provided. Suitable information and communication technologies have been identified for putting the infrastructure to use. Solar smart benches have the potential to revolutionize the smart city ecosystem.

Key Terms in this Chapter

Solar Smart Bench: This is a futuristic bench that comes in different designs and shapes and is normally installed in public places. It generally has the capability to provide charging a range of facilities such as ports for charging smartphones and e-bikes.

Smart City: This is a modern form of a city or an urban space that provides smart living experience. Smart cities are supposed to produce most of the energy required within their own ecosystems and thus are supposed to be eco-friendlier than their legacy versions. They operate more on digital platforms that are powered by niche technologies such as the IIoT.

Urban Health: This is the term that represents the general health of humans living in modern and urban spaces. Urban health depends on air quality, level of pollution, greenhouse gas emissions in the immediate surroundings.
