Abstract

Religious tourism in Pakistan is a diverse and culturally rich sector poised for growth, yet facing numerous challenges, including infrastructure deficiencies, maintenance issues, security concerns, undiscovered potential, economic factors, cultural disparities, and data gaps. OpenStreetMap (OSM), a community-driven mapping platform, offers transformative solutions. OSM can empower users to map religious sites, provide information, improve accessibility, and advocate for cultural preservation. It can help in route planning, community engagement, tourism promotion, and economic empowerment. OSM can address Pakistan's challenges by mapping infrastructure, supporting maintenance, ensuring safety, promoting lesser-known sites, enhancing economic inclusivity, and fostering cultural harmony. Real-time data from OSM has the potential to empower sustainable tourism development.

Religious And Pilgrimage Tourism

Religious tourism comprises diverse manifestations driven by spiritual incentives. These encompass brief journeys to sacred pilgrimage hubs, devout conventions, as well as extended sojourns to both domestic and global pilgrimage destinations (Rinschede, 1992). Religious tourism has equal importance for urban and rural areas. For example, Mafudi et al., (2021) have identified four potential opportunities for educational visits related to religious experiences in rural areas, which encompass the following: simulated pilgrimage routes, designated swimming facilities for Muslims, prayer facilities, and venues for archery activities. This form of tourism involves individuals or groups traveling for purposes such as pilgrimage, missionary work, or leisure. It can be categorized into two primary types: one involves tourists actively participating in pilgrimages, while the other comprises tourists seeking to gain insights into religious practices and visit locations associated with their faith (Ramos & Mafé-García, 2018).
