Abstract

Faculty development is the key strategy to ensure instructional quality and support institutional change. In order to increase faculty participation, online support is considered to be an effective approach. This study aims to examine the use and effectiveness of an online environment designed to support faculty professional development in teaching. The environment contains real-life teaching case videos, interview and seminar videos, and an online discussion platform, in addition to text-based materials. Findings revealed that participants especially found the teaching case videos useful for their teaching. Online discussions among participants from various disciplines helped to gain awareness of different perspectives, situations, and experiences. The online support for faculty development has the potential to accommodate adjunct faculty's work schedules and limited availability on campus.

Online Environments To Support Faculty Development

Most successful faculty development programs are adaptable and allow for self-paced scheduling, enabling faculty to overcome the time limitation barrier on participating (Elliot et al., 2015). Faculty development programs should incorporate flexible schedules and various delivery methods and consider the continuing change in the higher education area. Online learning environments may provide flexibility and self-paced scheduling, so that they can contribute to successful professional development, and faculty can get support and receive training which is aligned with their instructional context (Gao et al., 2022).

The growing demand for online education (Baran & Correrira, 2014; Elliot et al., 2015; Gao et al., 2022; Mohr & Shelton, 2017) is one of the primary shifts affecting the field of higher education. Due to the move towards online education, it has become necessary to support the professional development of faculty members in offering online courses (Baran & Correrira, 2014; Gao et al., 2022; Gülbahar & Adnan, 2020) as well as to offer programs for online professional development (Elliot et al., 2015).
