Abstract

This chapter engages in a hypothetical deliberation on the potential applicability of the idea of humanitarian intervention during selected phases of the Syrian conflict (2011-present) as part of a broader systematic inquiry into the situation of endangered civilian populations from the perspective of Michael Walzer's theoretical contribution to the literature on the subject. It uses such theories as jus ad bellum, jus in bello, jus post bellum, the principle of last resort, the principle of proportionality, and the principle of fair treatment of prisoners of war to further deliberate on various aspects of this ever-changing situation in the local conflict zone.

Literature Review

This chapter is dedicated to everyone interested in expanding their explanatory horizons and challenging their preconceived notions of truth in the realm of international relations. It is designed for use in a wide variety of courses: global problems and solutions, international relations theory, applied ethics, and experimental philosophy and aspires to contribute to these rapidly developing research fields. It relies heavily on Walzer’s Just and Unjust Wars (1977), along with its subsequent editions with various articles, and his commentaries published in Dissent Magazine (between 2011 and 2019). This piece is also a natural continuation of my recent paper titled “The Syrian Conflict (2011–ongoing): How a Perfectly Winnable Uprising Has Ended Up as a Ferocious Proxy War of Global Importance” and a fulfillment of the next stage of my broader research that relates to my recent publication (2021) titled On the idea of humanitarian intervention: a new compartmentalization of IR theories, published by Ibidem Verlag.
