Abstract

This chapter delves into organizational adaptability within BANI scenarios, stemming from volatile, uncertain, and fragile contexts. It explores essential capabilities—both ordinary and dynamic—critical for fostering innovation in dynamic markets. By emphasizing antifragility, resilience, and robustness as responses to disruptions, it underscores the importance of key soft skills and management components. Resilience, robustness, and antifragility are presented as sequential responses to disruptive events. Its objectives encompass highlighting the shift from VUCA to BANI scenarios, examining environmental trends and degradation, analyzing disruptive events shaping fragility, and crafting efficient tools for navigating turbulent scenarios. The chapter emphasizes the significance of vital soft skills and management elements in facilitating organizational adaptation.

Introduction

In this chapter, we comprehensively address the confluence that arises between the VUCA and BANI environments, presenting an approach to the environmental dimension. The evolution of these environments has radically transformed reality, leading to repercussions on social, political, economic, and environmental systems. This transformation impacts the dynamics of current markets where organizations operate, creating a chaotic scenario that presents both opportunities and challenges.

The identification and analysis of environmental trends become relevant and are interconnected with economic and social aspects. This relationship, along with the behavior of individuals and organizations interpreting these elements in their actions (Uribe, 2023), gains significant importance. It raises questions about the impact of human activity on the environment and the subsequent deterioration caused by society and its companies' inappropriate use of natural resources. This, in turn, affects the quality of life for human beings. Thus, we aim to explore the components of organizational management and how they are influenced by BANI environments.

Throughout the chapter, we observe organizations' responses to disruptive events in environments characterized by turbulence and fragility. The analysis goes beyond describing the VUCA-BANI environments; it extends to proposing specific solutions and recommendations. These seek to equip organizations with the necessary tools to confront these challenges, linking the findings to organizational adaptability, antifragility, and management components in turbulent environments.

This research aims to contribute to a comprehensive understanding of how organizations can navigate and thrive in a landscape characterized by its volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity. The environmental dimension plays a crucial role in this dynamic.

Historically, organizations ensured business survival by aligning with their strategic horizon. In this context (Markides, 2020), each business had to consider key aspects favoring survival. Trends and behaviors were considered, and data were analyzed to develop the business strategy.
