Abstract

This study aims to analyze the emergent and disruptive digital technologies in an era of artificial intelligence (IA). It departs from the assumption that the emerging technologies create both opportunities and challenges with an impact on individuals, organizations, institutions, and society at large in terms of bias, surveillance, hacking, etc. The method employed is the critical analysis based on the recent developments reported in scientific literature. It is concluded that control over the ethical disruption of digital technologies and more specifically artificial strategy must require a digital conversation and leadership about acceptable ethical behaviors under the assumption that digital transformation cannot be interrupted and must be guided by humans.

The Evolution Of Emerging And Frontier Technologies

The pace of change is likely to accelerate because of the “frontier technologies” that are redefining our world, taking advantage of digitization and connectivity, include artificial intelligence (IA), big data, blockchain, the Internet of Things (IoT), 3D printing, robotics, drones, biotechnology, and nanotechnology. Frontier technologies are those that take advantage of digitization and connectivity (UNCTAD, 2021). Emerging and disruptive technologies evolution has become the buzzword of the current economic and productivity growth, geopolitical landscape, and security architecture, to build resilience leading to conclude that there is a strong link between them. The design of future digital technologies is bound to change the technological socio-ecosystem and the society at large.

Organizations and states remain the major actors in technological innovation designing and implementing policies, strategies, tactics, and instruments, although the leading technological edge is currently and will be lead in the future by private firms, university research centers and academia while extending the possibility to involve the whole of society approach in operations. The emerging technologies create both opportunities and challenges with an impact on individuals, organizations, institutions, and society at large in terms of bias, surveillance, hacking, etc. Digital technologies enhance economic, societal, and socio-ecological resilience in terms of health, education, connectivity, communication, etc. Emerging technologies are a highly innovative tool that seeks to become integrated as a dominant competence (Castro, 2021).
