Abstract

The modern era is characterized by rapid technological advancements, globalization, and societal changes. In today's fast-paced and constantly changing world, traditional leadership approaches are often insufficient to navigate the complexities of the modern business landscape. In recent years, the rise of the millennial generation has transformed the landscape of leadership in various industries. The millennial generation has emerged as a dynamic force reshaping the global workforce and leadership landscape. As this generation continues to move into leadership roles, there is a growing need to identify and understand the essential skills and characteristics that enable them to thrive in these positions. This chapter explores the key skills and characteristics required for millennials to excel as leaders, highlighting the unique challenges and opportunities they face in today's rapidly evolving business environment.

Background

The existing research works in the area of leadership skills in millennials reveals that millennials possess unique leadership attributes driven by their distinct upbringing and exposure to technology. Many studies agree that millennials are adept at utilizing digital tools, which contributes to their collaborative and adaptable leadership style. Their emphasis on work-life balance and social responsibility has also shaped their leadership approach, focusing on employee empowerment and inclusivity.

The employee job and supervisor satisfaction are predicted by perceived managerial effectiveness in reducing boring aspects of work, as well as perceived managerial support of employee coping mechanisms (Martin et al.,2023). The study provides a systematic testing of ethical leadership and organizational citizenship behavior (OCB) by examining the underlying mechanisms of leader motivation language on ethics through which ethical leadership influences followers’ OCB at the team level(Abu et.al,2022). The support for the mediating role of a proactive orientation is linked with authentic leadership to creative performance, above, and beyond the effects of ethical leadership. With a highlight on the moderating role of LMX on the authentic leadership-proactive orientation relationship (Sumanth et al.,2023). There are practically significant differences between millennial leaders and Generation X leaders. Millennial leaders display less leadership behaviour than those of Generation X(Easton, C. and Steyn, R..2023). New hires through effective onboarding programs ensures employees meet their potential, thereby contributing to employer–employee success(Chillakuri,2020). The characteristics of the cohort Generation Z and need to identify strategies for maximizing their talent is critical for the organization to accommodate this cohort group. With Generation Z entering the workforce, the nature of entry-level jobs is changing; hence, HR needs to redesign their strategies to attract and engage Generation Z(Chillakuri, B. and Mahanandia, R.,2018).
