Abstract

Sam (Satyan) Pitroda is an entrepreneur who was responsible for developing the early versions of distributed processing based digital PBXs in the United States of America. After a successful business career in the U.S., he left for India in the 1980s to place the telephone in the perspective of nation-building. He founded the Center for the Development of Telematics which was responsible for developing a switch that works in rural India. he is currently the Advisor to the Prime Minister of India on Technology Missions. During the past two years, he has begun to alter his focus from telecommunications in India to telecommunications in developing countries.
